Charity Barbecue Success

Posted: 29th July 2015

On Saturday 11th July we hosted a double-event in Back Park.

Firstly, across York all the Edible York gardens were hosting an open day and naturally we were keen to show off our newly created community allotment in Back Park, as well as the community orchard that we created behind the War Memorial.

Secondly, we hosted a charity barbecue in aid of Cancer Research. This was a part of a national fund-raiser for Cancer Research and barbecues were held all over the country that day to say "Burger Off" to cancer.

The support for the event was amazing. Tony Neary butchers (on Clifton Green) provided meat for the barbecue, and Thomas of York bakers provided bread buns (big thanks to both!), and volunteers from our group chipped in with further food and drink. We raised a proud £114 for Cancer Research!

We also had introductory Tai Chi sessions from Fran, and Tim entertained the crowd with his guitar.

We were also honoured and blessed to receive a VIP visit from the Right Honourable Lord Mayor Sonja Crisp, along with the Lord Mayor's Consort and York MP Rachael Maskell. Sonja is a loyal and proud supporter of Back Park, after she saved it from being developed on in 2008 and securing the play equipment in 2010. When Sonja was invited to the event she made it a priority amongst her busy Lord Mayor's schedule, for which we are very grateful.

The Lord Mayor and Rachael Maskell MP finished the event with a VIP radish pulling event!
