Edible York Community Allotment

Posted: 1st June 2015

The latest endeavour of the Friends of Leeman Park group has been to bring fresh fruit and veg to the neighbourhood for anyone to help to grow and for all to harvest. This is part of a movement round York called Edible York, where similar communal food growing occurs in areas such as the Barbican, Marygate and The Groves (to mention a few!)

We have started by building four large raised beds, which should make the gardening accessible to most people, in which potatoes, onions, beans, radishes and more have been planted. In the borders there is mint, chives, marjoram and more herbs, as well as lots of strawberry plants and fruit bushes.

This also compliments the orchard that we planted in the area behind the war memorial near the vets, which will give local people a supply of fruit and nuts in coming years.

Join in if you would like to dig in and help with your green fingers!
